Transforming a Chicago Condo with Engineered White Oak

When Keara Miller purchased her condo in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, she saw the potential to bring her design vision to life. “It was just ugly enough to be perfect,” she joked. The unit had great bones, including a functional layout, ample natural light, and stunning skyline views. However, outdated parquet floors, kitchen tiles, and old carpeting distracted from its charm. “I knew it just needed a simple update to completely transform it,” Keara said.

One of Keara’s main goals was replacing the mismatched flooring throughout the living, dining, and kitchen spaces. When Keara had worked for Carlisle as a Wide Plank Specialist, she understood the impact high-quality hardwood flooring can have. “I knew flooring and countertops were the two areas where quality really matters,” she explained.

Living in the space during the project, Keara opted for a prefinished engineered hardwood floor to speed up the process. She chose Haven from Carlisle’s Tranquil Collection for its light, airy tone with a subtle gray tint. “The cool tone balances the warm sunlight that fills the condo,” she shared.

Keara selected 8-inch-wide planks to minimize seams and create a calm, spacious feel. The wider boards also showcase the wood’s natural beauty without creating overly busy patterns.  She appreciated the unique character of real wood, with its natural variations and warmth. Her custom-crafted floor, made from American wood, added a sense of nature to her city home. “It’s so calming to have that connection to nature in my urban space,” she said.

Tom Smoliga of Red Oak Hardwood Floors expertly installed Keara’s heirloom-grade planks, known for their minimal knots and unique grain patterns. Together, Keara and Tom carefully placed each board, highlighting its individual beauty. A standout 10-foot board was placed at the entrance, immediately catching guests’ attention. “It sets the tone for the entire home,” Keara said.

Even Keara’s dog, Nellie, has put the new floors to the test. Despite tug-of-war games and plenty of running around, the Haven flooring holds up beautifully. The light color and low-sheen finish help disguise minor wear, keeping the space looking fresh.

Paired with light gray walls, the prefinished white oak floors completely transformed the condo into a serene, minimalist retreat. Keara couldn’t be happier with her first home and knows the floors will boost its resale value when she eventually moves on. According to realtor.com, high-quality hardwood floors can increase a home’s sales price by up to 2.5%.

For now, Keara is enjoying her space and continues to share her passion for Carlisle’s floors with clients. “When I talk to clients, I love telling them that every floor is custom-made with the highest quality materials. It’s an investment that lasts a lifetime,” she said.
